Ninety-six secondary school students of the Saturday School for Gifted Students in Mathematics received their completion certificates today at a ceremony held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).The Certificate Presentation Ceremony of the Saturday School was officiated by Prof. Paul Chu, President of HKUST and Mrs. Fanny Law, Secretary for Education and Manpower.Launched in October 2001, the Saturday School is a joint initiative by HKUST and the Education Department to nurture secondary students with exceptional talent in Mathematics.Congratulating the students on their success, Prof. Chu said: “Gifted secondary school students in Hong Kong provide an essential pool of talent for our knowledge society. With proper training to sharpen their analytical skills and fully develop their potential, they will be valuable asset to society.”

科大创建走航平台即时监测空气质量(只供英文版本)
Hong Kong's first mobile air pollution monitoring platform was inaugurated today at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The platform will allow researchers to map air pollutant concentrations in real-time, throughout different areas of Hong Kong.The Mobile Real-time Air Monitoring Platform (MAP) was developed by HKUST with a grant of HK$12.3 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Prof. Paul Chu, President of HKUST, and Mr. Paul Cheng, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, jointly officiated at the Inauguration Ceremony.A powerful research tool to monitor air pollution, MAP is a specially fitted-out van designed for continuous measurements of air pollutants, and is ideal for inaccessible locations such as tunnels and bus depots.

Two scientists from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were honored with the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship Awards for their research excellence.Dr. Tai-Kai Ng, Associate Professor of Physics and Dr. Randy Y C Poon, Associate Professor of Biochemistry, were among the five scholars who received this year’s Croucher Senior Research Fellowship Awards. They were selected through a highly competitive review process by leading experts in the international scientific community.Mr. Donald Tsang, Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR, presented award certificates to the five winners at a presentation ceremony held by the Croucher Foundation today.

科大举办国际研讨会探讨科技产业化与经济发展(只供英文版本)
Technology and business leaders from 10 major economies will share their experiences in promoting technology-driven growth at an international symposium to be held in Hong Kong next week.The symposium, entitled “Economic Development through Commercialization of Science and Technology”, is jointly organized by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. The 4-day event will begin on 19 March 2002 (Tuesday).The symposium will hear models and experiences from Silicon Valley, India’s hitech region of Bangalore, the UK’s Cambridge Science Park, as well as those of the Chinese Mainland, Germany, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Sweden, Israel, and Canada. Presentations will also be made on Hong Kong’s own technology initiatives, including the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, and the Nansha IT Park in Guangdong, of which HKUST is a development partner.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today a new program to admit gifted students, to encourage outstanding Form 6 students to pursue highereducation in Hong Kong.Prof. Yuk Shee Chan, HKUST Vice-President for Academic Affairs, said: “Many top students go to the US or other countries for further studies after Form 6. With the introductionof this new program, we’re offering them better opportunities to study in Hong Kong instead.”“We’re looking for all-round students who excel not only in academic performance, but also in leadership, communication skills, social service and extra-curricular activities,” he said.

Award-winning photo journalist Jin Shouxian will hold his first exhibition in Hong Kong––Splendors of the West––at the Library Gallery of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 13 March to 30 May 2002.Born in Chongqing, West China, in 1943, Jin served in the military before he embarked on the career of a photographer. Currently he is the chief press photographer of Southwest Economic Daily in China. Since first publishing his photographs in 1978, he has received over a hundred gold, silver and bronze medals in exhibitions and contests in China and abroad. In 1992, he won the first Sichuan Literary and Art Prize. In 1998, the China Photographers' Association conferred on him the title of "Outstanding Member with Noble Character and Superb Skills". His works are widely exhibited in the US, Japan and Europe, and published in newspapers, magazines, books, photo albums and art calendars.
